Vote for your favourite – so long as I agree

John & Edward

John & Edward

Yes, it’s that time of the year again where TV goes into quality nosedive. Saturday nights will never be the same again.

This time round, fresh faced and not thinking about the televoting scandals of old, The X Factor has had a big advertising campaign encouraging people to vote for their favourite ‘talent’.

John and Edward, pictured, have done better than predicted. Millions of people tune in every Saturday night just to see what zany act they’re going to pull off next. It would also appear that a fair percentage of the audience actually vote for the Dublin duo too.

‘Talented’ acts have allegedly been sent home, because John & Edward have maintained their place in the competition, by being entertaining and although not original, bringing a fresh feeling to the whole competition.

“I don’t dislike them as people, I just don’t think they are the act we were looking for.”

Simon Cowell

This quote just about sums up what is wrong with television talent contests. It’s a repeat of John Sargeant on Strictly Come Dancing last year. The ‘talent’ are happily doing their job, they are entertaining, and getting a reception which indicates appreciation for them. The programme producers and the media think differently – they are happy for the talent show to go ahead, so long as the outcome is controllable by them and so long as the act which survives can be marketed in a way which suits the producers.

Is it hypocritical to state on telly that the public decide the winner, yet off-set whinge that the acts you’re faced with aren’t up to scratch?

No doubt something will happen further down the line to squeeze them out of the competition. In the mean time, if you want to bugger up live TV…

Vote John & Edward!
