Andy Coulson stopped editing the News of the World in 2007 after some phone tapping allegations. The latest revelations from the Guardian have lead to Labour and the Liberal Democrats calling for Coulson’s resignation. Cameron says no.
Cameron was aware of the phone-tapping allegations when he hired Coulson. Cameron wasn’t aware of the extra 3,000 allegations. That’s the problem, the extra 3,000 really give Coulson a bad name. Was he unaware? Was he just a bad editor? Was he involved? We’ll have to wait for the Police – but then again the investigation will probably end without charges being brought.
After banging on about trust for the last few months, Cameron really should be quicker off the mark. Can we trust a word that Coulson says if it’s found that he was involved in the hacking after denying it quite so vigorously?
