I think occasionally we all need a little reminder about global warming.
This ice was holding back a larger ice shelf, about the size of Jamaica – it was acting a bit like a cork, keeping everything in place.
Channel Four showed Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth last night. Whilst flicking around the channels we kept honing in on it, it was intriguing, it captivated us, and shocked us to our core.
Why did the ice melt quite so fast? Al Gore gives the answer in the film – ice acts as a mirror, deflecting the sun’s rays back into space at the poles. When the temperature rises and water is allowed to form, the water soaks up the sun’s rays, raising the ice temperature. It’s a bit of a chain reaction.
And what happens if we loose a bigger ice shelf?
